What is Specified Skilled
Worker (SSW) ?
Launched in April 2019, Japan’s SSW visa program opens pathways for foreign nationals with specialized skills to work in key sectors. Through an MoC signed in 2021, India and Japan now collaborate to place skilled professionals, including caregivers, in meaningful roles across Japan.

Target Segment
Japan welcomes individuals aged 18 and above possessing significant expertise or experience in a particular sector from abroad to address manpower shortages through the Specified Skilled Worker program. This includes opportunities for those aiming to become a care worker in Japan.

Japanese Language
Level Required
Proficiency in the Japanese language for daily life and workplace is assessed through Japanese language exams. Individuals who have completed three years in Technical Intern Training are exempt from these exams, making it easier for them to become an SSW Caregiver in Japan.

Period of Stay
Currently, participants can stay for a maximum of five years. Bringing family members along is not allowed.

Skill Standards Required
Skill level validation is conducted through sector-specific exams. Once a person qualifies the skilled worker exam they are eligible to sit in placements and work as a caregiver in Japan.

Applicable Specific Sectors
Prospective participants in the Specified Skilled Worker(SSW) program can choose from 12 sectors designated by the Government of Japan. These sectors encompass a wide range of industries, including nursing care, caregiving, construction, automotive, agriculture, food service, and others.
Why Japan
& SSW?
Japan, with an average age surpassing 48, faces a workforce shortage due to the lack of young workers, while India boasts an average age of 26. Projected population decline of 30% to 40% by 2030 prompts Japan to implement the SSW program, hiring overseas human resources for 3-5 years to address job vacancies.
