What is Specified Skilled
Worker
?

Launched in April 2019, Japan’s SSW visa program opens pathways for foreign nationals with specialized skills to work in key sectors. Through an MoC signed in 2021, India and Japan now collaborate to place skilled professionals, including caregivers, in meaningful roles across Japan.

Target Segment

TITP is designed for individuals aged between 18 and 35 years who are seeking international work experience along with technical training. It offers a structured pathway to work in Japan while gaining sector-specific expertise that is globally valuable.

Japanese Language
Level Required

Proficiency in the Japanese language is essential to adapt to daily life and workplace settings. Candidates are required to complete basic Japanese language training (typically up to JLPT N4 level) before deployment, ensuring smooth integration into Japan’s work culture.

Period of Stay

Candidates under TITP can stay and work in Japan for 1 to 5 years, depending on the job role and sector. The duration allows ample time to gain technical know-how and improve employability. Family accompaniment is not permitted under this program.

Skill Standards Required

Applicants must undergo pre-departure skill training and certification aligned with the sector they’re applying for. On-the-Job Training (OJT) in Japan further enhances their expertise. Skill development continues throughout the program with clear growth benchmarks.

Applicable Specific Sectors

TITP covers a wide range of essential industries in Japan. These include healthcare, construction, agriculture, fishery, food processing, textiles, electronics, accommodation, and more — offering opportunities to candidates across varied skill domains.

Why Japan
for TITP?

Japan, with an average age over 48 and a rapidly declining birth rate, faces a severe labor shortage — projecting a 30–40% population drop by 2030. In response, the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) was launched to fill workforce gaps across key industries. With India’s youthful average age of 26, the two nations have partnered to strengthen TITP, enabling structured skill transfer, cultural exchange, and mutual growth.

Benefits

Financial Growth

Interns receive a good salary in Japan, allowing them to support their families and save for the future.

Frequently Asked

1. What is TITP?

The Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) is a program established by the Japanese
government to offer individuals from developing countries the opportunity to work in Japan,
acquire technical skills, and gain practical experience in various industries. The goal is to
transfer technical knowledge to benefit the economic development of the participants' home
countries.

Applicants must typically meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old (age limits may vary depending on the country).
  • Have completed secondary education or vocational training relevant to the technical
    skills they seek to learn.
  • Be physically and mentally fit.
  • Hold a valid passport.
  • Have a genuine intention to return to their home country after completing the program.

The main benefits of participating in the TITP include:

  • Gaining technical and vocational skills in a specialized industry.
  • Acquiring on-the-job training in a foreign work environment.
  • Earning a stipend or salary while undergoing training.
  • Gaining international work experience that can enhance future career prospects.
  • Exposure to Japanese culture and work ethics.

The TITP spans a variety of industries, including:

  • Manufacturing (automobiles, electronics, etc.)
  • Agriculture
  • Construction
  • Healthcare (nursing care)
  • Textile and garment
  • Food processing
  • Engineering
  • Hospitality

The program is typically divided into phases:

  • 1st year: Basic technical training.
  • 2nd and 3rd years: Advanced training in the specified industry.
  • 4th and 5th years (optional): Extension for additional training based on performance
    and employer needs.
  • Sending organizations are responsible for recruiting and preparing candidates in their
home country. They provide pre-departure orientation, language training, and handle
    administrative processes.
  • Supervising organizations in Japan monitor the interns’ progress, ensure the quality of
the training, and ensure their welfare.

Yes, basic proficiency in Japanese is usually required. Most sending organizations offer
Japanese language training as part of the preparation process. This is essential for effective
communication in the workplace and daily life in Japan.

Participants will receive a Technical Intern Training Visa from the Japanese embassy or
consulate in their home country. The visa is usually issued after a successful application
through a certified sending organization, and once the internship contract with the Japanese
company is signed.

Wages depend on the industry and the company, but participants are paid according to
Japanese labor standards. Interns can expect a monthly salary, with additional benefits such
as accommodation, transportation, and insurance, in some cases.

Trainees are supported by the supervising organization in Japan, which monitors their
progress and ensures that their working and living conditions are compliant with Japanese labor
laws. Trainees also have access to health insurance, housing support, and career guidance.
